Sekretaris Jenderal AFC, Datuk Windsor Paul John, sebelumnya mengatakan jika Qatar yang terpilih menjadi tuan rumah, maka Piala Asia 2023 baru bisa digelar pada Januari 2024 mendatang. Sebab, cuaca pada saat itu dinilai lebih sejuk dan tidak panas.
John juga menyampaikan pada akhir pekan lalu jika Negeri Gingseng tersebut terpilih menjadi tuan rumah, Piala Asia 2023 akan digelar mulai Juli tahun depan. Penentuan jadwal tersebut itu tidak lepas dari pertimbangan cuaca.
Sedangkan Indonesia diketahui tidak diikutsertakan karena tragedi yang terjadi di Stadion Kanjuruhan, Sabtu (1/10/2022). Hal ini membuat Indonesia gugur dari tiga kandidat kuat bersama Qatar dan Korea Selatan.
“Kalau Korea Selatan terpilih, turnamen akan dimulai pada Juli 2023 kerana cuaca pada saat itu sesuai untuk pertandingan di mana tidak terlalu sejuk atau panas. Tetapi jika Qatar dipilih, Piala Asia akan diadakan pada Januari 2024 sebab waktu itu cuaca tidak panas,” ujar Paul John, dikutip dari Arena Metro, Sabtu (15/10/2022).
Seperti diketahui, Piala Asia 2023 sejatinya dijadwalkan di China. Namun karena alasan Covid-19, Negeri Tirai Bambu itu menarik diri dari amanat tersebut.
Persiapan bagi tuan rumah baru Piala Asia 2023 tentu terbilang singkat jika baru ditentukan menjelang akhir tahun ini. Qatar pun terpilih karena dinilai memiliki cukup persiapan setelah mengemban amanat tuan rumah Piala Dunia 2022.
Terlebih jarak waktu hingga dua tahun kedepan dirasa lebih cukup untuk mematangkan kembali fasilitas yang ada. Kesempatan ini juga menjadi peluang bagi Timnas Indonesia untuk kian meningkatkan performa mereka.(sportstar.id)
